Coconino County is the largest county by size in Arizona. It is larger than the nine smallest states. The only county larger than Cococino is San Bernardino County in California. It is makes one-sixth (1/6) of the total land area of Arizona.
The county seat is Flagstaff. This makes Flagstaff the most important city in north-central Arizona, where the county is situated.
The county contains Grand Canyon National Park, the Havasupai Nation, and parts of the Navajo, Hualapai, and Hopi nations. The Native American population makes up nearly a third of the county’s population. The largest group is the Navajo. Even then, the county derives its name from Cohnino which is another name for the Havasupai people.
