UAB School of Medicine Allergy and Immunology Fellowship

The UAB Allergy and Immunology Fellowship Program is a two-year, ACGME-accredited program that trains physicians in the diagnosis and management of allergic and immunologic diseases.

The program is affiliated with the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Medicine, one of the leading medical schools in the United States.

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for the UAB Allergy and Immunology Fellowship Program, applicants must:

  • Be board eligible or certified in internal medicine, pediatrics, or combined internal medicine and pediatrics (Med-Peds).
  • Have completed at least three years of residency training in internal medicine, pediatrics, or Med-Peds.
  • Have a strong academic record and letters of recommendation.
  • Pass the UAB Allergy and Immunology Fellowship Program interview.

Training

The UAB Allergy and Immunology Fellowship Program provides comprehensive training in the diagnosis and management of allergic and immunologic diseases.

Fellows learn to perform allergy skin testing, interpret allergy laboratory tests, and develop and implement treatment plans for patients with a variety of allergic and immunologic conditions. Fellows also have the opportunity to participate in research projects and to present their work at national meetings.

The UAB Allergy and Immunology Fellowship Program offers training in both pediatric and adult care. Fellows have the opportunity to see patients of all ages, from infants to adults.

Fellows also have the opportunity to participate in clinical rotations at the UAB Children’s Hospital of Alabama and the UAB Hospital. The children’s portion mostly takes place at the Children’s of Alabama Park Place clinics. Adults are treated at the UAB Kirklin Clinic, Birmingham VA Medical Center and the UAB Gardendale Allergy and Asthma Clinic.

Fellows are also encouraged to pursue electives of their choosing in adult or pediatric ENT, dermatology, GI and pulmonary specialties. This allows fellos to build experience with food and drug challenges, oral immunotherapy (OIT), drug desensitizations, allergen immunotherapy and immunoglobulin replacement management.

Board Pass Rate

The UAB Allergy and Immunology Fellowship Program has a 100% board pass rate. This means that all fellows who complete the program pass the board examination for allergy and immunology. Fellows who complete the program have a high likelihood of passing the board examination for allergy and immunology.
