Training
Course work is broken into weekly virtual learning modules helmed by faculty led small group discussions covering the materials. There is further focus on simulation and case-based discussions alongside bedside teaching.
Additionally, there are department wide core curriculum lectures, visiting professors, and continuous quality improvement sessions weekly via Zoom
Four basic educational periods
The anesthesiologist residency program at UAB is divided into four basic educational periods. These periods correlate to program years.
Program Year 1 is the internship year. It serves as an entry ramp into the general medical knowledge and skills needed to succeed in anesthesiology training.
Program Year 2 heralds the start pf the Clinical Anesthesiology training. It is synonymous with CA1. This year is marked by Basic Orientation. Generalized clinical training also begins. The initial subspecialty training begins at the end of CA1 year.
Program Year 3 lines up with the second year of Clinical Anesthesiology training, CA2. This is a big year. A resident will have progressed through all rotations in the different subspecialty areas. The majority of cases required by the American Board of Anesthesiology will be completed.
Program Year 4 is CA3. By this point, the resident will have sufficient training to develop an elective clinical experience that meets individual goals. Throughout this year, the resident can opt for additional subspeciality training, elective rotations and gaining operating room management skills.
Clinical Experience
UAB Montgomery has a world-renown University Hospital. The hospital is at the center of the clinical experience. Other affiliated hospitals are expanding training access. These other hospitals are Children’s Hospital of Alabama, UAB Highlands and Birmingham Veteran Affairs Medical Center.
The anesthesiology residency program at UAB emphasizes progressive autonomy for residents. Residents are provided with diverse caseloads, enabling them to make patient-care choices early on in their training while guided by experienced faculty members.
As their experience and knowledge increase, residents are given increasing responsibility. This approach allows them to develop their operational methodology for approaching each patient individually, evaluating their unique circumstances, and devising targeted plans of care.
** Experience and training in ultrasound and echocardiography, using simulation trainers and bedside teaching are part of the educational process.
Additional experiences
Residents have numerous opportunities to enhance their experience while at the UAB Anesthesiology Program. This includes mentored research, dual degree programs, moonlighting opportunties and leadership.
