Tuskegee is the largest city in Macon County, Alabama. Though it is the principal city in the region, the population has been falling over the past 20 years. About 1/3 of the population has left the city since the 2000 census.
Tuskegee has been important in African-American history and remains that way today. The area was at the heart of the cotton trade before the Civil War. After the war, Tuskegee became the home of a leading Black educational institute. It also featured prominently in integrating the U.S. military as well as expanding healthcare access.
